Lowndes County Historical Society and Museum
Lowndes County Historical Society & Museum (229) 247-4780 The Historical Society supports a museum located in the former Carnegie Library at 305 West Central Avenue. The Museum includes exhibits displaying artifacts from early Lowndes County families. An interpretive exhibit: "Lowndes County: Pas, Present, and Future" is housed in the newly renovated basement and gives a thematic view of the county's evolution. In addition to exhibits, the Musuem houses a collection of manuscripts, maps, photographs, and photographic slides. The Hugh Vallotton Genealogical Library provides resources for those doing family research. The building, constructed in 1913, was designed by Valdosta architect Lloyd B. Greer. Placed on the National Historical Register of Historic Places in 1984, the structure is a good example of adaptive reuse.
